Despite Tuscany being sucha well-worn destination for tourists, the area along the coast, known as theMaremma, is scarcely visited and is known as ‘Tuscany’s best kept secret’. Youmay well, however, have tasted a ‘bistecca alla fiorentina’, the celebratedT-bone steak, which in fact comes from the big white cattle farmed in thisregion by cowboys, known as ‘Butteri’. There are some wonderful inland hilltowns such as Pitigliano, originally built by the Etruscans, high on volcanicrock and Massa Marittima, with quaint cobblestoned medieval streets. On thecoast, Castiglione della Pescaia is a charming little fishing port with acastle. You will then head for the rugged coast of Monte Argentario, withpretty little coves and bays, perfect for taking a dip in the blueMediterranean Sea. Continuing along the coast, you will get some spectacularviews.
