Despite Tuscany being sucha well-worn destination for tourists, the area along the coast, known as theMaremma, is scarcely visited and is known as ‘Tuscany’s best kept secret’. Youmay well, however, have tasted a ‘bistecca alla fiorentina’, the celebratedT-bone steak, which in fact comes from the big white cattle farmed in thisregion by cowboys, known as ‘Butteri’. There are many Etruscan hill towns, suchas Pitigliano ‘the little Jerusalem’, Sovana and Manciano, while there are somebeautiful little coastal villages, most notably Porto Ercole and Talamone. Youmay choose to dive into the Mediterranean Sea or simply drive from meal tomeal; you could choose to have a wonderful home-made pasta with wild boarsauce, cooked by ‘mamma’ and sitting at an outside table and then head to thecoast for the next meal of fresh fish at a fisherman’s family restaurant on thecoast. Other activities could be shopping or golf. Maremma deserves at leasttwo days of your time.
