Today you will set off inthe footsteps of Michelangelo as you head for the Carrara marble quarries; hewould often spend several months here, seeking the perfect piece of marble, claiming that he could see how a figure would climb out of it. The Romans too carvedtheir figures from the Carrara hills and in more recent times, the likes ofHenry Moore and Botero sought their marble here. Lunch will be in a traditionaltrattoria in Colonnata; the village is famous for the production of ‘lardo’spiced and aged in marble vats and bearing no comparison to the Englishtranslation of ‘lard’; it is quite delicious and has to be tried, thinly slicedwith local bread. After lunch, you will be able to explore the village ofPietrasanta, home to famous sculptors to this day.
