Like all the Mediterranean islands, Sardinia had its fair share of invasions over the centuries but what makes Alghero unique is that following the invasion by Pedro IV of Aragon in 1354, it remained very much a Catalan city, in its language and traditions and to this day, it has numerous cultural exchanges with the Iberian Peninsula. It is a great city to explore on foot and unlike many tourist cities, still has a thriving fishing industry, so it’s fun to look at the port too. Most of the city wall is still intact, broken by seven defensive towers and there is some stunning architecture in the Catalan-Gothic style.
