Asti is known the worldover for its production of spumante, sparkling wines but it is also adelightful town to explore with a fascinating medieval heart. The cathedraldates back to the 14th century and is built in high gothic style,with some notable works of art. The main street is the Corso Alfieri, namedafter a famous poet whose birthplace is now the civic library. The circular 12thcentury baptistery of St Peter’s church is now a museum and houses a collectionof Roman and Egyptian artefacts. At the end of the Corso is the 125 foot highTrojan Tower, which dates back to ancient Rome.
