The tour starts inthe achingly picturesque little fishing port of Camogli, with its pretty littlecolour-washed houses, clinging to the steep slope down to the harbour. It takesits name from a contraction of ‘Casa Mogli’ meaning house of wives; in daysgone by, sea voyages could often last years and the women ran the port whilethe men were away. Dominating the town is the beautiful baroque Basilica of S.Maria Assunta. From the harbour, take the boat around to the next bay of SanFruttuoso and as you approach the bay, the imposing sight of the BenedictineMonastery will come into view, together with the Doria Tower. The abbey wastaken over by the Doria family in the sixteenth century and they added anelegant little church to contain the family tombs. After visiting the abbey,take the boat to the most famous port on the Riviera, Portofino, renowned forits appeal to the jet-set and home to the sort of designer shops they require.Little cafes are dotted around the port and it is a great spot to sit andpeople-watch, not to mention gazing at some of the luxurious yachts mooredalongside. End the day at neighbouring Santa Margherita, with its palm-lined esplanades,grand hotels and elegant villas, before returning to your hotel.
