Two stunning hill towns make up this delightful day into the countryside. First comes Casperia in the heart of the Sabine hills. It is a traffic-free perfect example of a medieval walled village, with only two entrance gates. Once inside you will really feel that you are stepping back in time as you wander around the narrow winding streets. Then onto Cortona, made famous by Frances Mayes in her book ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’. It is perhaps the epitome of a hill town, originally an Etruscan settlement, it became what we see today in the middle ages, with narrow winding streets clinging to the hillside. As you turn a corner you will suddenly come to a magnificent square, such as the Piazza della Repubblica and will also be rewarded by some glorious medieval churches.
