Start this pilgrim route byvisiting the churches of San Paolo alla Regola and Santa Maria in Via Lata,considered to be on the sites of the first two houses where St Paul lived andtaught in Rome. From here to the ancient church of St. Priscia, an earlyChristian martyr, known to St. Paul. Then to the most sacred spot, the Abbey ofthe threefountains, where St. Paul was beheaded on the orders of the Emperor Nero.According to ancient legend, the head bounced three times and on each of theplaces it touched the ground, a fresh water spring emerged, hence, the Abbey ofthe three fountains. The tour continues with a visit to the Papal Basilica ofSt. Paul Outside the Walls, where St Paul’s tomb lies, under the main altar.Finally, if time allows, a visit to St John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome andtherefore known as the ‘Mother of all churches in the world’.
