Explore the much neglectedand fascinating interior today, with a visit to Nuoro. The position is superb,nestling beneath the soaring peak of Monte Ortobene on one side and MonteCorrasi on the other. The old quarter is most attractive and there is awonderful museum of Sardinian life and traditions. The town boasts some quitenotable literary figures, the most famous being Grazia Deledda who won theNobel Prize for Literature in 1926 and his house is open to the public, displayingvarious photographs and mementoes. From here, head to Mamoiada, famous for itscarnival costumes and particularly for its masks which are celebrated in theMuseum of Mediterranean Masks. In the afternoon, visit Orgosolo which isinfamous for being the bandit capital of the island. In the first half of thetwentieth century, there was constant warfare between rival clans. Nowadays itis famous for its murals, many of them covering whole houses and shops,portraying village culture and many illustrating oppression by landowners ordemanding Sardinian independence.
