Two exciting ancient Roman sites awaitdiscovery today. Umbria has plenty of evidence of Roman rule, but as so often, much of it lies unexcavated beneath modern cities. In Carsulae however this isnot a problem, as the city was abandoned early in its history, due toearthquakes and civil war. This city lies 15KM north of Terni and was a veryimportant staging post on the Via Flaminia, connecting Rome with Ancona. It wasa prosperous city and there are the remains of the amphitheatre, gate, bathsand tombs and most excitingly, part of the original roadway, complete with thegrooves made by carts and chariots. In the afternoon, you will be able to visitthe Cascata delle Marmore, an amazing waterfall, created by Roman engineers in271 BC, when they diverted the River Velino into the Nera during draining ofthe marshlands to the south. Its total height is 165m (514 feet), making it oneof the tallest in Europe. A path along the falls allows the visitor to hike upto the top of the falls.
