Siena is divided into 17 ‘Contrade’ or districts, indeed, it is thesedistricts that compete with each other in the famous ‘Palio’ horse race. EachContrade has an animal as its emblem, giraffe, tortoise, unicorn, dragon etc.which are represented in flags and on buildings. During this walking tour, thechildren will be encouraged to look for these symbols and work out when theyhave entered a different Contrada. The prize will be a childrens’ book inEnglish, about the Contrade with a smaller prize for the runners up if morethan one child.
