Foligno is one ofthe few towns in Umbria to be built on the plain, and although much of it ismodern, the old part around the Piazza della Republica is worth exploring. There is a 12th century cathedral and the Trinci Palace has someincredible frescoed staircases and carved ceilings. Not far away is the littletown of Spello with some notable Roman remains, including parts of the wallsand three of the gates. It is a great little town for a wander and the churchof Santa Maria Maggiore has some fine frescoes by Pinturicchio.
