Trastevere literally means‘across the Tiber’ and was once a very working class district of the city.Things change and picturesque squares and attractive narrow streets have turnedit into a very fashionable residential area with a wealth of great restaurants.As one of the oldest districts of Rome, it also boasts many fine churches andthe tour will start with the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere with its finecollection of 12th century mosaics. From here, continue to theBasilica of Saint Crisogono, dating from the 5th Century, with aPaleo-Christian church in the crypt. The tour ends at the Basilica of SantaCecilia, patron saint of music. The church was built on the site of her 2ndcentury home, where the story goes that she was locked in the hot room of herprivate baths for refusing to give up her Christian beliefs and, refusing todie, sang continuously for several days. Finally, her head was hacked off butit took many blows to kill her. Centrepiece of the church is a fine 16thcentury statue of Saint Cecelia by Stefano Maderno.
