This unique tour takes you on a journey, 40 metres beneath the streets of Naples. It’s as if an ancient parallel city sits underneath the modern one that stands today. Down here lie over 150 tunnels made from volcanic rock, known as ‘tufa’. The tunnels were created by the Greeks, who used the excavated stone to build the city above. The Romans then expanded them to create huge cisterns for their water supplies and later, during the Second World War, the tunnels were used as air raid shelters. As we stroll through these tunnels, deep underground, centuries of history will be brought to life as we discover drawings, names and dates inscribed into the walls. This is a rare and special tour, unlike any other in the city.
