Cuma was the first Greek colony on mainland Italyand was later home to the legendry Sibyl who was consulted by Aeneas when hewas fleeing Troy. The so called Cave of the Sibyl can still be seen, where theSibyl used to dispense her wisdom from three large chambers. Between Pompeiiand Herculaneum lies the modern town of Torre Annunziata, but just outside itlies Oplontis and the Villa Poppea, named after Nero’s second wife. It too wasdestroyed in the 79AD eruption of Vesuvius and is one of the best preservedvillas in the area with sumptuous wall paintings and gardens. Like allPatrician villas of this period, it features a bath complex with amazing wallpaintings.
