One of the undoubtedhighlights of a visit to Puglia are the ‘Trulli’, strange conical buildingsmade of stone but with the tops picked out in white and Alberobello is theheart of ‘Trulli’ country. Nobody quite knows the origin of these strangebuildings, but as they are built of dry stone, there is speculation that theycould be dismantled very quickly if the tax-collectors came round. There areover 1500 of them in Alberobello and in recent years they have become verypopular with foreign buyers. A short drive will bring you to Martina Franca, with more ‘Trulli’ and a fascinating medieval town centre.
