The little resort town ofAngera lies on Lake Maggiore one of the most famous of the Italian lakes. Itdates back to Roman times, when it was known as Angleria and was an importantlake port and road hub. Today, the town is dominated by the Rocca, an ancientcastle and one of the very few perfectly preserved medieval fortresses inItaly. Inside the castle, in what were the law courts is a magnificent 13thcentury fresco cycle, depicting the life of Archbishop Ottone Visconti. Thisvery atmospheric part of the castle is also used for concerts. The areaproduces some notable wines and has some splendid, panoramic views across thelake.
