Bergamo is very much a city of two parts, thelower town, Città Bassa and the upper town, Città Alta. As you would expect, the city started with the upper town and this is the chief area of interest. Here you will walk along narrow winding medieval streets but will also see somewonderful Renaissance architecture, owing to the fact that the city was ruledby Venice for over 350 years. It is also ringed by a magnificent set of gatedwalls, some a bit crumbling now, but sufficient to keep invaders out until1796, when the French Revolutionary troops successfully stormed it. At theheart of Bergamo lies the Piazza Vecchia and from here, you can visit theColleoni Chapel and the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica.
