First stop this morning will be the charming town of Tempio Pausania in the heart of the Gallura district, at the foot of Monte Limara. The town is famous for cork production and granite quarries which is reflected in its fine architecture. A short drive will then bring you to Monte Limara where there is a magnificent panorama of the whole of northern Sardinia, before heading for Aggius, a very picturesque village. Still in the heart of granite country, the town houses a fascinating museum of country life, through the ages. A drive through a landscape which is almost lunar will bring you to Castelsardo on the coast. There are some breath-taking views to be had and the old town is a delight to wander through. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Antonio Abate, patron saint of animals, while the church of Santa Maria is home to the ‘Criltu Nieddu’ a crucifix with a black Christ, which is much venerated and thought to be the oldest in Sardinia. As its name suggests, there is of course a castle.
